Keep Your Car Safe This Winter

November 05, 2020 3 min read

The days are getting colder, the evenings are getting darker and very soon, Winter will be upon us.

This time of year brings such delights as cosy warm jumpers, hot chocolate and mulled wine a plenty, however along with all of these delights comes heavy rain,  snow and icy roads.

Here are our top tips for keeping your car safe this Winter.

1) Make sure you have a sturdy ice scraper!

Forget pouring hot water over your windscreen when you’re late for work.

Whilst this seems like a good, fast solution, using hot water risks cracking your windscreen or damaging your paintwork, not to mention scalding your hands! With our  Glazier Ice Scraper you’ll be ice free in no time and it features a fleece lined glove which will keep your hands snug and warm whilst de-icing.

2) Make sure your car tyres have plenty of tread!

Low tyre tread can dramatically increase your risk of skidding whilst driving on snow and ice. UK tyre law states the lowest legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, however in Summer it is widely considered you should change your tyres when you get under 3mm.  In Winter, this increases to 4mm due to the roads being extra slippy! Our simple promotionalTyre Tread Depth Keyring is a great giveaway to ensure you always have a means of checking your tyres, it comes with akey ring so once its attached to your car keys it’s a constant reminder.

3) Make sure your car tyres are at the correct pressure!

Contrary to popular belief, reducing the air in your tyres won’t help increase traction on snow or icy roads, in fact, it could make things worse! In cold weather, your tyres will have less pressure than in the summer, and because of this, it can be beneficial to inflate your tyres to 0.2bars above the summer tyre recommended pressure. Before the cold weather hits, our promotional  Digital Pressure Gauge will help your accurately determine your tyre pressure so you know if any of your tyres are low.

4) Check your antifreeze/coolant level!

What is antifreeze/coolant?

Antifreeze and coolant are vital for your car’s engine, and ensure it runs smoothly without overheating. Coolant is distilled water mixed with antifreeze and this solution circulates around your engine to keep the temperature at the optimum overstaying temperature.

Checking your coolant level is a very simple process and only takes a couple of minutes. This should be done when your car engine is cold to ensure you get a correct reading.

Your coolant reservoir can be found in the engine bay under the bonnet and is identifiable by the brightly coloured liquid inside which can be seen through the semi transparent housing. Make sure the level is between the minimum and maximum markers shown on the side of the reservoir.

Because the engine has to be cold for this measurement, a lot of people do this in the dark, be it early in the morning or late at night when the engine is cool.

To help make this easier, these  Keyring Torches are extremely useful for not only looking in your engine bay, but also finding the keyhole on your front door! The 9 LEDS inside this torch ensure you get an extremely bright light and your batteries last a long time!
